Student Experience Café: Dr Debbie Le Play

Dr Le Play analyses the interesting results of her research into the transition of new students in coping with the social, cultural and academic life at University.  She takes her lead from the Commissioned paper ‘Students at the Heart of the System’.  The same questions are used to see how the new DMU students perceive them.  Dr La Play creates an informal atmosphere for the research in the form of the Student Experience Café.  The clip then evaluates the findings which challenge the perceived model of the ‘student as a consumer’. She outlines the importance of engagement with learning, but also the social and cultural integration of the University experience, and concludes that the university has to engender learning opportunities and environments which encourage growth, development, interdependence and empowerment.
