Jason is reflecting on the academic study skills of referencing. His research focuses on the academic staff and their approaches to referencing, whereby he has found that there are specific sets of rules associated with different disciplines. This is particularly difficult for students on combined degree courses, as there is inconsistency of these rules. He identifies the rules as a series of metaphors that need to be deciphered before students become successful. Therefore for HE needs to develop a consistency in assessment and feedback to ensure that students reach their full potential and this requires demystifying the ‘rules of referencing’.
